As I look out the window and see mounds of snow all around it is hard to believe that summer is coming soon! Well, not soon enough but this summer in Seaside Heights is going to be great! This weekend frozen swimmers will be coming from all around to the beach and boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ, to take part in the annual Polar Bear Plunge. Braving waters which may be as low as 30 degrees, the event is held every year in an effort to raise 1 million dollars for the Special Olympics, New Jersey organization. Each participant has to donate a minimum of $100 to join in the event.
This year will be the 16th annual Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights, and they now have more than 3,000 people registered for the event, some from as far away as Alaska. There will be costumes, arcades and thousands of spectators in attendance. Big Joe Henry, “the Voice of the Plunge”, from Radio station NJ 101.5, will broadcast live from the Aztec Ocean Resort, site of the Plunge, with interviews, updates and a countdown to the Plunge.
The event is sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a volunteer effort by the Law Enforcement community of New Jersey to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics New Jersey. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey was ranked number two in the world for raising more than $2 million in 2007.

The Plunge – 1:00 pm
Lunch – 1:15 (if you go for a plunge you and one guest eat for free)

The holiday lights will be lit on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 26th, 2008. This is a longstanding tradition in town and can be seen on the all along the boulevard. While obviously it will be a little early for the prom goers and summer vacation renters the Seaside nightlife will be expected to be bustling as it is one of their busiest nights.
A quote from Public Relations Director Peter Smith: “If you thought 2007 was over-the-top, wait until you see 2008!” Seaside Heights has a vast team that oversees the large operation and are amongst the many excited for this event.
Also Coming up in Seaside Heights winter extravaganza is New Year’s Eve day on the Boardwalk for “First Night Ocean County“. Come out for a non-alcoholic evening of festivities.
First Night Ocean County will also see a fireworks display beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the boardwalk (weather conditions permitting). All times and shows are subject to change. says the B.I.D.
The Seaside Heights boardwalk is a hub of family fun on New Year’s Eve Day, with an “amazing” amount of people, says boardwalk businessman Wayne Cimorelli, a member and past chair of the Business Improvement District, which is the sponsor of First Night Ocean County. The comments were made during one of the many meetings held to plan this and other winter events.
The Seaside Heights Business Improvement District website says, “Join us for New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, December 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights. There’ll be entertainment, prizes, and lots of surprises. Bracelets will be on sale for $5.00 at the County Connection in the Ocean County Mall or any of the participating arcades. Present your First Night Bracelet to pick up a Seaside Heights Passport at any participating venue to be eligible to win a gift basket worth over $500.00!! ”
According to Maria Maruca, the BID Executive Director, the marketing plan is such to inform people that Seaside Heights doesn’t “close”, and things like the light display, First Night Ocean County and February 28th’s New Jersey Law Enforcement Polar Bear Plunge are examples of year round family fun in the Borough.
